66% of Canadians Say Sanctions on Israel Would Be ‘Reasonable’: Poll

GLOBAL NEWS — Two-thirds of Canadians think government sanctions on Israel would be reasonable in light of last year’s UN Security Council resolution condemning the construction of Israeli settlements, according to an EKOS poll sponsored by the non-profit organization Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) and partners.

The UN’s December resolution demanded that Israel “immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.” The administration of former U.S. President Barack Obama controversially abstained from voting, effectively allowing the Security Council to adopt the resolution.

Obama’s successor Donald Trump, then the President-elect, criticized the resolution as showing “total disdain and disrespect” towards Israel, but appeared to shift his stance after taking office. […]
