Chink in the Armor: Millennial Evangelicals Are Tilting Away from Israel

Much of America’s support for Israel stems from evangelical end-times nutwingism. The nature of the evangelical belief systems lends itself to blind support of Israel. There is little or no sympathy to others in the equation, such as the Palestinians. LifeWay Research conducted a poll that illustrates this mentality. More than 60% of those surveyed believe “the Bible says God gave the land of Israel to Jews.” And even more disturbing, about 55% see current circumstances as critical to end-times biblical prophecy.

However, there may be a generational split developing between old-timer, over-65, evangelical nutwings and the younger 18-to-34-year-old cohort. We have to conclude that — at least for the less-calcified young — it must be hard to reconcile all you’ve been told about the Jews being God’s chosen people when they are shooting, maiming and using white phosphorus on Palestinians in an open-air concentration camp.

The Wall Street Journal reports the chink in the armor:

Millennial evangelicals, however, are less supportive of Israel and of the U.S.’s involvement in the conflict with the Palestinians. Only 58% of evangelicals ages 18 to 34 hold positive views of Israel, compared with 76% of evangelicals over 65, according to a December survey of more than 2,000 people from LifeWay Research, an evangelical polling organization.

Among African Americans with evangelical beliefs, 50% have a positive view of Israel.

Joel Rosenberg, who wrote the survey, opined, “Unless the church gives younger believers a healthy, balanced, solidly biblical understanding of God’s love and plan for Israel, overall evangelical support for the Jewish state could very well plummet over the next decade as Millennials represent an ever-larger percentage of the overall church body”.

Sadly, a IRmep poll fielded by Google Consumer Surveys shows most Americans (49.2%) are completely clueless about the last 2,000 years in this region of the world. They believe that Palestinians occupy Israeli land rather than the reverse. Brits, Canadians and Mexicans aren’t nearly as dumbed down. In the US only 22% of end-time nutwings say modern Israel has been unfair to Palestinians. Only a tiny 9% actually view Israel negatively.

It’s not clear how much good will the Israelis have burned through of late. There are anecdotal signs of it, but this author is not in a fair position to judge. Clearly, the Likudnik supremacists ruling Israel have gotten a big boost from Trump moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.
